The Studio Thinking Art Room
There are two philosophies of Art Education that have shaped my teaching. New Art Basics (NAB) is the curriculum research project that I was immersed in through my college art education program. Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) is a more recent program that I've explored. While the two approaches are different, they both have at their core the question, "What do artists do?"
NAB focuses on teaching the THINKING SKILLS that artists need to be able to create.

TAB focuses on creating an environment for artists to engage in ARTISTC BEHAVIOR when they are creating.

These two approaches merge perfectly to develop independent, creative makers through Studio Thinking: Studio Habits of Mind. https://www.studiothinking.org/
The Studio Habits include:
Envision, Observe, Stretch & Explore, Develop Craft, Express, Engage & Persist, Understand Art Worlds, and Reflect.
These studio habits become the framework and vocabulary for us to learn what artists do.
Learning to think and create as an artist requires the art classroom instruction to become more student-directed and less teacher-directed.
